I Need to Calm Down

International Blog Against Racism Week

Posted by Vox on 7 August 2007

This week is the second annual International Blog Against Racism Week. Last year’s IBARW turned out some incredible blog posts, including the must-read “How to Suppress Discussions of Racism.”

Of course, anti-racist blogging (and action in general) shouldn’t be limited to one week a year, but IBARW did end up inspiring a lot of people to blog more about racism (and inspired more wonderful blog entries like “The Art of Defending Racism“) and take it into the “real world.”

If you’re interested in participating in this year’s IBARW, more information can be found at the LiveJournal community. Also, relevant entries can be bookmarked at the IBARW del.icio.us site by tagging them “for:ibarw.” And if you’re not interested, there are still a TON of fascinating links on the community and in the roundups.

How to participate?

If you would like to participate, here’s what to do:

1. Announce the week in your blog.

2. Switch your default icon to either an official IBAR week icon, or one which you feel is appropriate. To get an official IBAR week icon, you may modify one of yours yourself or ask someone to do so. Here’s a round up of IBARW icons. (Vox’s Note: This seems to mostly be applicable to LiveJournal and similar blogs.)

3. Post about race and/or racism: in media, in life, in the news, personal experiences, writing characters of a race that isn’t yours, portrayals of race in fiction, review a book on the subject, etc. (Linking back here is highly appreciated!)
