Unjustified use of force

Posted by Vox on 18 September 2007

You can skip straight to the summary at the bottom if you want.

A University of Florida student was Tased for asking John Kerry uncomfortable questions.

This is wrong. This is bad. This is something horrible, that should never, ever happen. This guy was a jackass, but he did not deserve to be Tased; he did not even deserve to be arrested or have his mic cut, as he was exercising his freedom of speech.

THIS IS NOT NEW.

This happened a year ago to an Iranian American student in a UCLA library. He was asked to leave because he had no ID. He argued, then took his shit and left, stopping to tell a friend where he was going. The library staff called the police, who stopped him while he was exiting the door and tried to arrest him. He yelled that he was doing what he was told to and they had no reason to arrest him, and they grabbed him, then Tased him as he continued to argue. He was Tased multiple times for not being able to stand up right away after being Tased. He was Tased despite yelling that he had a medical condition. People who tried to get the officers’ badge numbers (which they are required by law to give) were threatened with a Taser.

Why were so many people jumping on the “Yay, police” bandwagon back then? Because “he had it coming”?

Every time the police have used unjustified force, breaking the law and their own department policies in many cases, against people of color, it’s been pushed off as a “pet issue.” Video of LAPD beating the crap out of a Chicano kid? “The kid had it coming.” Video of LAPD beating the crap out of Latina news reporters and May Day protesters? “Those illegals had it coming.”

Video of police Tasing some polo-shirted white boy mouthing off to John Kerry, and all of a sudden now white people want to debate freedom of speech and whether use of force was justified? What, all of a sudden it’s, “Oh my God, they’ll Tase us too?”

Uh, yeah. We’ve been trying to tell you that for years. ‘Bout time you all got with the program.

And what the FUCK is with all those people cheering as the police drag that poor kid off to the back of the auditorium, and with John Kerry just jabbering on like people are still paying attention to him? What a bunch of assholes.

Summary
The cops suck more than people in general do, but slightly less than John Kerry, who is a real jackass. They definitely aren’t around to protect regular people, just the corrupt officials who pay their salaries. Also, your vote doesn’t matter, no one with power actually respects the Constitution, and the government is a scam to take your money and other countries’ resources, by force if necessary. Any other old news to air today?

AsianWeek: Come on, guys, please read our paper, pleeeeeaaaaasse.

Posted by Vox on 18 September 2007

AsianWeek wants to know what they have to do for us to read them, aside from firing Kenneth Eng, which they did months ago, and haven’t you forgotten about that yet? They’re putting together focus groups and offering bribes of food and a chance to win a free plane trip somewhere. Hyphen has the scoop.

I’m mostly passing this on because, like Neela points out, a paper like AsianWeek has the potential to be an awesome resource. If it’s not all stupid and racist, anyway.

Mychal Bell still in jail

Posted by Vox on 18 September 2007

Mychal Bell, one of the Jena Six, had his conviction thrown out on Friday. It was ruled that he’d been improperly tried as an adult. To which I say, good. Students should be punished for fighting in school. That punishment should be suspension or expulsion, or maybe some community service, not 22 years in prison, and that punishment should apply evenly to everyone involved in the fight, whether the attackers or the instigator.

Dr. Elle and Kevin were on top of this when it happened. Good news, right?

Today, though, BlackAmazon reports that Mychal Bell is still in jail. Why? The judge and DA couldn’t be bothered to show up at a court hearing.

The black teen at the center of a furor over legal racism remained behind bars - though charges against him were thrown out Friday - because the judge and prosecutor didn’t come to a bail hearing yesterday, his lawyer said.

“We showed up. There was nobody there,” said Bob Noel, lawyer for 17-year-old Mychal Bell of Jena, La. “No DA, no judge.”

A woman who answered the phone at District Attorney Reed Walters’ office said he had no bail procedure on his calendar. [Full story]

Nice.

The rally planned for Sept. 20 is still on, according to Colors of Change. Apparently it’s needed.
